If you're planning your wedding, chances are you've already asked yourself the big question: Should we do a first look, or should we wait until I walk down the aisle?

As a wedding photographer and videographer, here's my honest answer: I love both! There's something incredibly special about a groom seeing his bride for the first time as she walks down the aisle, but there's also something so intimate about a first look. Neither option is wrong, and I'm never going to tell you that you have to do one over the other. It really comes down to your vision for the day, your timeline, and what feels right for the two of you.

Let's talk about both!

The First Look: A Moment Just for You Two

A first look is when you and your partner see each other privately before the ceremony. Usually, we'll find a beautiful location, get you both in place, and let the magic happen. I'll hang back with my camera and capture everything as it unfolds.

From a photographer's perspective, I absolutely love first looks because they give me the opportunity to capture both of your reactions up close. I'm able to focus on the little things, like the way your partner's face changes when they turn around, the happy tears, the nervous laughter, and the way you hold each other when it finally hits you that you're getting married today!

But honestly, my favorite part of a first look isn't even the photos.

It's the time you get to spend together.

Wedding days are BUSY. Between getting ready, family photos, the ceremony, and everything else on your timeline, you can go hours without getting a moment alone with your person. A first look gives you that opportunity before the day really takes off.

You get to hug, laugh, cry, talk about how nervous you are, and just be together without a hundred people watching. There's no pressure to hurry along because the ceremony is about to start. It's just the two of you, soaking in the moment.

And from a timeline perspective? A first look can be a game-changer. We can often take some of your portraits and wedding party photos before the ceremony, which means you may have more time to enjoy cocktail hour and celebrate with your guests afterward.

Of course, every wedding timeline is different, but if having more breathing room throughout your day is important to you, a first look is definitely worth considering!

The Traditional Aisle Reveal: A Moment Worth Waiting For

Now, let's talk about waiting until the ceremony.

There is something undeniably magical about seeing your partner for the first time as you walk down the aisle. The music starts, your guests stand, and suddenly you're looking at the person you're about to spend the rest of your life with.

For some couples, that anticipation is a huge part of what makes the ceremony so meaningful. Maybe you've dreamed of that moment since you were little. Maybe your partner has been looking forward to seeing you in your wedding dress for the first time. Or maybe you simply love the tradition of saving that reveal for the ceremony.

And that's beautiful!

As your photographer, I love capturing those reactions, too. There's something so powerful about a groom seeing his bride walk toward him, surrounded by the people who love them most. Those genuine, emotional moments are exactly why I love what I do.

The biggest thing to consider with a traditional aisle reveal is your timeline.

Depending on your ceremony time, lighting, and how much time you have between the ceremony and reception, we may need to fit all your couple portraits, family photos, and wedding party photos into a shorter window afterward. That doesn't mean your day will be rushed or that you shouldn't choose this option. It simply means we'll want to plan ahead so you can get the photos you want without feeling like you're missing your own wedding.

If preserving that traditional moment is important to you, I want you to have it! We'll build your timeline around your priorities and make it work.

So, Which One Do I Recommend?

Here's where I might disappoint you: I'm not going to pick a side!

I genuinely love both options. I've seen the sweetest first looks, and I've seen aisle reveals that leave absolutely no dry eyes in the room. Both can be emotional, beautiful, and meaningful in their own ways.

What I will do is help you decide based on what matters most to you.

Consider a first look if:

  • You want a quiet, intimate moment together before the ceremony.
  • You're worried about feeling nervous or emotional in front of a crowd.
  • You want more flexibility with your wedding day timeline.
  • You'd love to have more portraits completed before the ceremony.
  • Spending a few extra minutes alone together sounds like a dream.

Consider a traditional aisle reveal if:

  • You've always dreamed of seeing each other for the first time at the altar.
  • You love the anticipation and tradition of the ceremony reveal.
  • You want that moment to happen in front of your family and friends.
  • You're comfortable planning your portraits around the ceremony schedule.

And remember, these aren't strict rules! You can have an emotional first look and still have a meaningful ceremony. You can choose a traditional aisle reveal and still have a relaxed wedding day. The goal is to create a timeline that works for you, not to squeeze your wedding into someone else's idea of how it should look.

One Last Thing Before You Decide

If there's one piece of advice I'd give every couple, it's this: Don't make your decision based solely on what you think will photograph best.

As your photographer, I'll capture beautiful moments either way. I want the photos to look incredible, of course, but I also want you to look back on your wedding day and remember how it felt.

If having a quiet moment alone with your partner before the ceremony sounds like something you need, let's plan a first look. If you've been dreaming of that aisle reveal your entire life, let's make it happen.

And if you have absolutely no idea which one you want? That's okay, too! We can talk through your timeline, your priorities, and what matters most to you.

At the end of the day, this is your wedding. You deserve to enjoy it, be present for it, and spend as much time as possible celebrating with your favorite person.

I'll take care of capturing the memories. You just focus on making them!
